Fence installation and repair in Norfolk

Norfolk work runs the same way as the rest of our service area: wood privacy fence first — the type we specialize in — then 6-foot vinyl privacy fence, 54-inch aluminum pool fence, and chain link.

Many older Norfolk lots need a full tear-out and replacement rather than a patch, and have mature trees and tight lot lines — we measure on site so the estimate reflects the actual yard.

Norfolk neighborhoods we serve

We install and repair fences across Norfolk, including Ocean View, Larchmont, Wards Corner, Ingleside, Bayview, Coleman Place, and Lochhaven. Coverage includes the 23502, 23504, 23505, 23508, 23509, 23513, 23517, and 23518 ZIP codes.

Fence types and services

Wood (our specialty), 6-ft vinyl, 54-inch aluminum pool fence, and chain link — for new installation, repair, and full replacement.

Norfolk fence rules: the Zoning Certificate, heights, corner lots

Read from the City of Norfolk Fence Regulations brochure (Development Services Center, updated Feb. 20, 2024) and Zoning Ordinance § 5.11. Zoning: (757) 664-6588. We pull the Zoning Certificate when your lot needs one and submit your HOA package.

Interior lots need no certificate

On an interior lot you can build, repair, or replace a fence without a Zoning Certificate. Corner lots and through lots need one. It is free, issued at the Development Services Center, 810 Union Street, and requires two copies of a survey done within the last two years.

Heights by yard

Front yard: 4 feet, and anything above 2.5 feet must be at least 50 percent open. Side and rear yards: 6 feet in residential and Historic and Cultural Conservation Districts. Where the line abuts a non-residential district the limit rises to 8 feet.

Corner and through lots

The corner side yard, the side facing the street, is limited to 6 feet with the same 50-percent-open rule above 2.5 feet. Behind the rearmost corner of the house a 6-foot solid fence is allowed if it sits at least 3 feet off the property line. On a through lot the street-side rear yard takes a 6-foot fence that is 50 percent open, or a solid one set back 10 feet.

What a fence costs in Norfolk

Installed rates from our current price book, the same numbers on every page of this site.

Norfolk yards are older and tighter, so the typical job is 80 to 120 feet and usually starts with a tear-out. From our price book: 6-foot dog-eared wood privacy $35.13 per linear foot, vinyl privacy $41.00 and up, residential chain link $15.99 to $19.99, commercial 6-foot chain link $21.99 to $27.99. A walk gate adds $545 to $595 installed, a double drive gate $1,123 to $1,287.

A 100-foot run of 6-foot wood privacy with one walk gate lands around $4,050. A 120-foot run in vinyl, about $4,300. 54-inch aluminum pool fence is quoted per project.

Mature roots, tight property lines, and the old fence coming down are the Norfolk variables, from Ocean View to Larchmont. Demo and haul-off appear as lines on the quote, not as surprises, and the written turn-key price holds unless the scope of work changes.
