Do you build pergolas attached to the house or freestanding?
Both. Attached pergolas tie into a ledger on the house and carry the far side on posts; freestanding ones sit on four or six posts anywhere in the yard, over a patio, a hot tub, or a fire pit. We size the posts and beams to the span, not to a kit.
Pressure-treated or cedar?
Pressure-treated pine is the workhorse: it takes stain, holds up in salt air, and costs less. Cedar is lighter, smells like cedar, and grays to silver if you leave it alone. We build both and tell you the price difference at the estimate.
What is a sun shade structure?
Posts and a beam frame, sized and set for a tensioned shade sail or a fixed canopy, so you get shade without a roof. The frame is built to take the wind load a sail pulls, which is the part a hardware-store kit gets wrong.
Do I need a permit?
In Virginia Beach and most of Hampton Roads a detached pergola under a set size usually does not, and an attached one usually does. We check the rule for your city and pull the permit when one is required.
